Choosing the material: wood, aluminium and PVC

Wood

Thermal insulation is its strong point: softwood (fir, pine) insulates better than oak and, the thicker the section, the more it insulates. Natural, warm, customisable in any colour and grain.

• Pros: insulation, natural feel, aesthetics, high customisation.
• Cons: the paintwork needs maintenance every 10–15 years; higher initial cost than PVC.

Aluminium

A durable, resilient material, ideal for large glazing and slim profiles that maximise light. Very low maintenance.

• Pros: durability, large sizes, minimalist design, low maintenance, brightness.
• Cons: initial cost (on average +30–40% versus PVC) and a “cold to the touch” perception.

A thermal break (e.g. in polyamide) is essential: it separates the outer aluminium from the inner one and blocks the cold, preventing condensation and mould.

PVC

Its main advantage is the low cost, combined with good thermal insulation from the outset and no need for repainting. Warm to the touch.

• Pros: low cost, good insulation, no repainting, warm to the touch.
• Cons: lower mechanical strength (not recommended for French doors over 240 cm or leaves over 80–90 cm); thermal expansion of about 12 mm every 2 m; colours achieved with films.

If you choose PVC, ask for the VOC certification on the materials.

Wood/aluminium

The best of both worlds: a wooden core inside, an aluminium cladding outside that protects from the weather. Very long lifespan and no exterior painting; the only limit is the cost, among the highest.
